Reimagining Childcare
By reviving spaces in Cincinnati

Addressing Cincinnati’s childcare crisis, this project highlights the significant disparities in access, affordability, and flexibility of childcare options within many marginalized communities. By mapping childcare deserts and identifying workforce gaps, we locate areas or neighbourhoods where families struggle the most to find reliable childcare. Our approach proposes strategic policies and the adaptive reuse of vacant properties, transforming them into sustainable childcare facilities. This not only increases the number of available seats for families in need but also strengthens early education opportunities for children who may otherwise be left behind. By focusing on these neighbourhoods which are identified childcare deserts, the project aims to support working families, increasing the employment, and promote greater equity. Ultimately, our vision is to foster a more resilient and inclusive Cincinnati, where all children and families have the resources, they need to thrive.
