SAECULI ET LOCI
Rewilding for Radical Recreation - Place + Time Design Magazine
It is Spring, 2026 in Ohio. Record highs make it feel like summer, as our shared planet continues to warm. Already dynamic weather events become increasingly erratic and impactful. Global relations tense, and we find ourselves bearing witness daily to atrocities funded by the billionaire class and our own tax dollars, without consent. Now more than ever, the construction and maintenance of spaces meant to bring us together, connect us with our natural world, cultivate mindfulness, and enhance ecosystem services, are paramount.
The term ‘zeitgeist’ is derived from a translation of the Latin: Genius saeculi- spirit of the times. To responsibly undertake the task of designing shared spaces, we must also embody Genius loci- spirit of place. This publication explores themes of diversity, safety, learning, and action to em body the spirit of today, as applied to the needs of a small, riverside community along the southern border of Ohio. Design elements are informed by requests direct from community members, de mographic, wildlife, and climate data, psychological theories of mindfulness, place awareness, and biophilia. As you read, I urge you to imagine these themes, interventions, and processes as elements of a circular system. Though consideration for the human and nonhuman environment were intentionally distinguished throughout the design process, re search shows that the structures and systems which support vibrant lives for each, are the same. So too are many of the challenges we face and hardships we endure. May this serve as a reminder of humanity’s intrinsic connection with all forms of life. Diversity is resilience, and our choices matter.
