Reviving Urban Surfaces
Heat Island Mitigation Intervention

Intensifying heat from built environments - such as parking lots and rooftops - poses many challenges to people's livelihoods. This project explores designs aimed at mitigating the severe impacts of urban heat islands in both urban and suburban contexts, offering environmental, economic, and social benefits. The designs explored include – but are not limited to – incorporating trees, bioswales, reflective pavement, and solar panels. By starting with specific urban and suburban sites in Northgate and Downtown Cincinnati, we demonstrate how intentional design can be replicated to the neighborhood scale and beyond in combating the heat island issue.
